8th October 2015 – Raad van Advies meeting

On Thursday 8th of October, the PROUD committee was invited to attend a Raad van Advies meeting. The meeting was held at Neways, north of Eindhoven and it involved more than 10 companies in the technical region as well as representatives of all Fontys departments. We were asked to present the PROUD programme, and pitch ourselves to the attending companies . The PROUD members who participated were Bozhidar Uzunov, Mehran Firoozbakhtan, Xheni Meda and Peter van Kollenburg, where the presentation itself was given by the chairman, Bozhidar Uzunov, and Mehran.

The presentation included an introduction to PROUD, our goals, information on the intake sessions, and a very important topic: the outcome of two researches that our students have carried out on“How does PROUD affect the grades of the students?”. We can fully say that the presentation was very successful because everyone in the meeting got involved into asking questions and coming up with topics of discussions. Now that we have 8 new students in the programme, we hope to have further contact with all these companies.

29th October 2015 – YER Master Class

We are proud to say that, we had our first event with our sponsor YER Technology.

On Thursday 29th of October, YER held a Master Class at its new office location in Eindhoven Flight Forum. The guest speaker was Prof.dr.ir. Pieter Kruit, a professor of Physics at the Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands. The class was about Nanolithography and the Dutch companies that master this technique. The presentation was divided into 3 parts, and was mainly directed to an audience with non-technical background. At last, Pieter Kruit also introduced his own company, which he founded with other co-workers and which in involved in the design and production of electron-beam, mask-less, nanolithography machines. The presentation lasted for about 1 hour and a half, and it included very interesting and brainstorming question sessions in between the presentations.

After the presentation, a standing buffet and drinks followed up. We went there with Peter van Kollenburg and 6 other students, catching the opportunity to mingle and get to know a number of experts and professionals who work with nanolithography and were invited by YER. Everyone was very friendly and it was easy to open up a conversation, or maybe the drinks made it easier. We got new contacts, met new people and even played a couple of games in foosball. All in all it was a great night and hoping for many more to come.

About PROUD Programme:I have joined PROUD because of the opportunity to work in companies and experience working with engineering while studying so I can apply the theoretical knowledge that I have from school.
Other students should join PROUD because after having an experience working in a company, it will help to understand which field is best suited for the student’s future interest. As well as to experience which company matches the student’s interest. Once it is accomplished there are so many things to discover and to learn. Not only that it is a lot of fun having to solve the challenging problem that will be encountered once working in a company.

I think everyone who is motivated to achieve greater things than just the bachelor diploma and thinks that is mature enough to maintain a balance between working and studying should join PROUD.
So far, I am really happy to have joined PROUD Program since it has opened a lot of work opportunities for me and also has helped me to create a larger engineering network.
I learned a lot from PROUD Program and in different fields such as professional aspect, technical aspect or social aspect, but I would definitely stand out from all of them, the working experience that you get from it. This work experience has helped me the most at this moment.

Workshop: Introduction to Linux

Getting tired of blue-screens (Windows) and hardware specific software (Apple OS X)? It doesn’t work as you want it to work, you don’t know how many back doors the OS has to NSA, MI6 etc, it has an unknown level of security and you still pay way too much money for it? There are alternatives depending on your usage.. so we are giving you the opportunity to get to know Linux!

This course is aimed at someone who has basic knowledge of how to use a windows computer and also knows a little about how a computer works. So even if you have never heard from the name ‘Linux’ before, you should be able to follow the presentation and workshop without any problem and ofcourse we will be there to assist.

First a presentation will be given as an introduction to the very basics of Linux. How it originated and how to use it. Second, a workshop will be given to actually work with Linux yourself.

– A laptop with latest version of ‘VMware Player’ installed
– The latest ISO of Arch Linux* (https://www.archlinux.org/download/ e.g. archlinux-2013.12.01-dual.iso)

*You only need to download the ISO file. You will receive instructions about how to install it during the workshop when we will actually install Arch Linux.

Definition of basic knowledge about how to use a windows computer:
– How the filesystem is organised (files are stored in folders in partitions on hard drives, create edit and remove files)
– Installing software (how to install a program and what (basically) happens when you do that)

The workshop will take place at the following time/date:

January 8th, 2014, 12:30pm. Duration: 1-1.5 hours

Location: R1 1.01

If you want to join, please sent an email to proud@fontys.nl. There is a limitation on the number of participants!

See you there!

Fontys PROUD students impress at Honours Symposium

On the 3rd and 4th of October, three international students from Fontys  Hogeschool Engineering (FHE) were given the opportunity to present at the  2013 Honours conference in Rotterdam.  More than 300 professionals and international guests attended this conference.

These 3 students, Deep Raj Khadka, Divyia Kanagalingam and Michael Kruger, are member of the excellent students programme at Fontys Electrical Engineering called PROUD (stands for PRogrammeOUtstanding Development).

They presented the results of their scientific research as one of the paper presentations. With this research they showed that this excellence programme, PROUD, boosts the curriculum at Electrical Engineering of the FHE.

Under the guidance of their supervisor, Mr Peter van Kollenburg, they also found that the PROUD programme is more than up to standard when compared to the other honours programmes from around the world.

The PROUD programme offers professional work experience, an aspect that many honours programmes do not offer. With these work experiences the PROUD students bring the needs of the companies into the engineering curriculum. Due to this all students have an up to date curriculum. The audience was very lyrical about this construction.

Overall, the conference proved to be very informative and an educational experience, many techniques were explored and discussed. The students enjoyed their experience at the conference and will come with proposals based on the new insights that they have gained by discussing other honours programmes. One of the changes will be the intake and interview of new candidates for this excellence programme.
